1483-1530. First Great Mogul of India from
1526, called Baber (Arabic `lion'). He was
the great-grandson of the Mongol conqueror
Tamerlane and, at the age of 12, succeeded
his father, Omar Sheik Mirza, as ruler of
Ferghana (Turkestan). In 1526 he defeated the
emperor of Delhi at Panipat in the Punjab,
captured Delhi and Agra (the site of the Taj
Mahal), and established a dynasty that lasted
until 1858.
